A great number of artisans now work with a relatively new invention from Japan - precious metal clay (PMC) which looks and acts in a similar manner to cooking dough. It can be shaped as required and then heat applied, either in a kiln or even with a small hand held torch. The clay burns away and the silver item is remaining. It enables some silver jewellery to be made relatively easily, without the need for soldering and can therefore often be made in a small work area in the home, rather than a fully fitted studio. A small number of PMC workers will combine the use of PMC with traditional methods or sterling silver wire work. PMC is fine silver and therefore not as durable as sterling. A ring made from PMC for instance, would be unlikely to endure the rigours of being stretched as the finished PMC piece of jewellery would be too brittle. You may also notice on some artisan's sites that a great many PMC workers only make silver drop earrings as the studs as earrings requires a need for soldering. The jewellery available from this website is sterling silver jewellery and conforms to the UK Hallmarking Act 1973 For further information relating to hallmarks, please do refer to the customer services / articles section
